The mixing of singlet and triplet states illustrated in Fig. 1 in principle involves all four radical pair states: one singlet state and three triplet states separated by the scalar exchange interaction (2J; the triplet has the higher energy for J > 0) and the dipolar interaction, whose contribution is orientation dependent. In high magnetic field, however, the T± states are separated from the singlet state by the Zeeman energy, which is much larger than J or D, the largest principal value of the radical pair dipolar tensor. Since the mixing efficiency is inversely proportional to the energy gap, the singlet and the T± levels effectively do not communicate and mixing is confined to the singlet level S and the triplet T0 level.
